The island of Nusa Penida lies close to the island of Bali in southeast Indonesia; it is part of the same-named district of Klungkung Regency. The Badung Strait separates the island and Bali. With a maximum elevation of 524 meters, Nusa Penida’s interior is mountainous, and its climate is drier than Bali’s. It is a popular tourist location, much like Bali.

Eleven much smaller islands, as well as the neighboring islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, are part of the administrative district of Nusa Penida.

Together, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, two small nearby islands located directly next to Penida, are known as the Nusa Islands. However, due to its breathtaking beaches and picturesque cliff vistas, Nusa Penida has become the most well-known of the three.

How to get to Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida Island Bali

Many speedboat operators offer daily trips to Penida in Bali, all leaving Sanur Beach at different times. You can also drive to Sanur and take a boat if you’re staying in Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, or any part of south Bali. A shuttle service from these locations is included in the overall cost of some boat companies’ packages.

The alternative is to reserve a day trip to Nusa Penida through a travel operator operating in Bali. This can be an excellent choice if you want to avoid trouble or have a busy schedule.

The cost of admission to Nusa Penida Island

Since 2023, visitors coming by boat have been required to pay an entrance fee to Nusa Penida, which is meant to fund improvements to the island’s infrastructure.

The cost is 25k Rupiah for adults and 15k for children, and you will pay it in cash when you first disembark off the boat in Penida. It provides access to Penida, Lembongan, and Ceningan, the three Nusa islands.

You no longer need to pay a second fee at Kelingking Beach because this ticket also grants you access to all of Nusa Penida’s major beaches and attractions.

Places to visit in Nusa Penida

1. Kelingking Beach

Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida

The most well-known sight in Nusa Penida and arguably one of Bali’s most iconic vistas is the Kelingking Cliff. Perfect turquoise water splashes around this amazing “T-Rex”-shaped rock that protrudes over the ocean. It is amazing when you first glance over the cliff’s edge and take this view! Once you have finished taking in the view, a walkway leads down to the beach at the base of the Kelingking Cliff. One of the nicest white sand beaches in Nusa Penida, Bali, awaits you at the end of the strenuous, somewhat terrifying, and at least two-hour round-trip climb.

2. Viewpoint at Paluang Cliff

Paluang Cliff Nusa Penida

Although everyone visits Kelingking Cliff, Paluang Cliff is nearby with equally breathtaking views. Kelingking is only a five-minute drive away. The fact that Paluang isn’t as well-known as Kelingking adds to its allure. It’s a fantastic substitute location that allows you to see the Kelingking T-rex from a different angle without the throng. In addition to a Balinese temple with a peculiar automobile shrine known as the “car temple” of Nusa Penida, there are swings and photo platforms at the Paluang Cliff.

3. Broken Beach

Broken Beach Bali

Broken Beach will be one of the first destinations for most Nusa Penida Island tourists. This cool circular cove, which still has its original arch, was carved in the rocks. You’ll probably notice several rays drifting around in the neighboring sea because this place is also one of the manta rays’ favorite hangouts. There is also a tiny white sand beach and the waves flood the bottom with turquoise water. Although you can only see the beach from above, it’s still a very beautiful view! According to certain ancient local traditions, this location was formed by the footprints of a giant.

4. Crystal Bay

Crystal Bay Indonesia

Crystal Bay is a well-liked location on Penida’s west side. There are plenty of food and drink shacks for refreshments, and it’s a great place to hang out or sunbathe. You may rent snorkeling equipment here, or you can relax and eat some chicken satay. The wonderful thing about Crystal Bay is that it’s among the greatest places in Penida to see sunsets. I returned here with a friend in July of last year, and as the sun set over the coastal rocks, we drank Bintangs with our toes in the sand.

5. Point of Banah Cliff

Banah Cliff Point Nusa Penida

The wonderful thing about Banah Cliff Point is that there are six distinct viewpoints along the cliffs. You can go all the way up to the brink of the cliff and gaze down at the waves slamming against the rocks from each of these viewpoints. From these cliffs, you can typically see speedboats and many little manta rays cruising the water below. The Banah rock, a doughnut-shaped rock protruding from the ocean, is also visible.

6. Goa Giri Putri Temple

Goa Giri Putri Temple Nusa Penida

A Hindu temple is on the east side of Penida, inside a large limestone cave. You must ascend almost a hundred stairs to the top of the hill to get there. Its interior opens up to a massive cave that is roughly 300 meters long and has towering rock ceilings after passing through a small hole in the mountainside! Although Hindu rituals are still conducted here, visitors are welcome. It’s an intriguing experience to explore this cave.
