HISTORY OF CHERRAPUNJI
The word “Cherrapunji” literally means ‘land of oranges.’ Initially, Cherrapunji was referred to as Sohra. However, because the British couldn’t pronounce it right, it gradually changed to Churra and then Cherrapunji.
Historically, the origin of this town was marked by the Syiems (Rajas) of Khasi Hills who governed this town between the 16th and the 18th centuries. But soon, these highlands quickly came under British rule in 1883 as the last of the syiems, Tirot Singh, was conquered by the Britishers.
You can also visit a memorial to David Scott, a British administrator in NE India from 1802-31 in the city cemetery. Recently, the state government of Meghalaya gave this location its old name, “Sohra,” once again.

Ki Likai was a young widow raising her little daughter in the village of Rangjyrteh close to the waterfall. She used to work hard to make ends meet. She chose to get remarried. Ki was adored by her second husband, but he hated her stepdaughter. Once when Ki came home from work, she was amazed to see that her husband had already made dinner.
Ki Likai happily had her dinner without knowing what had happened. Later, she discovered that her husband had killed and cooked her daughter. Heartbroken Ki Likai hurled herself down the cliff where the Nohkalikai falls originated.
Seven Sister Waterfalls
This magnificent waterfall will undoubtedly be one of the favorites of all the locations you visit in Cherrapunji. Nestled in the East Khasi Hills district, are these seven individual waterfalls gushing down adjacent to each other. Falling in a wild roaring cascade from a staggering height of 315 m, the waterfall offers a wonderful view.
