Rivers and Forts at Guhagar

Gopalgad fort:

In the Maharashtra district of Ratnagiri, in the village of Anjanvel, is the historic hill fort known as Gopalgad. It is one of the best-known forts in the Konkan and one of the top tourist destinations close to Ganpatipule.

Anjanvel Fort, also known as Gopalgad Fort, was built by Siddisad in the 16th century. It was captured by Shivaji Maharaj in 1660 CE, Khairat Khan in 1699 CE, Tulaji Angre in 1744 CE, and Peshwas in 1755 CE. The fort was a center for shipbuilding and cloth weaving during the Peshwa rule.

To defend Dabhol, a historic port city, Gopalgad Fort was erected on the banks of Vashishti Creek. The fort is divided into two sections and covers an area of about 7 acres. The fort’s lower walls are known as Padkot, and its upper walls are known as Balekot. To defend the fort against attacks, twelve buruj made of sturdy fort walls were built. Its eastern and western sides each have a main entrance gate.

One of the main draws is the Anjanvel Lighthouse, which visitors can ascend for a small fee. A pleasant place to visit, especially in the evening,  it is about 2 kilometers from the Anjanvel Fort. This lighthouse, which was rebuilt in the 1960s, is perched atop a sharp hill. Despite being only 30 feet tall, the lighthouse’s vantage point offers a breathtaking view.

Talakeshwar Temple, a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva with the picturesque sea as its backdrop, is located right outside the lighthouse. The famous Enron Power Project, which is nowadays called “Ratnagiri Power,” is also in this village.

Various people have different opinions on the name “Gopalgad.” Some claim that Gopalgad was given that name while Tuloji Angre was in power because he was a devotee of Krishna (follower). Some claim that Gopalrao served as this fort’s killedaar (guardian) during the Angre era, giving rise to the name “Gopalgad.”

Vashishti River :

One of the biggest rivers on the Konkan coast is the Vashishthi River. The Vashishti River gracefully meanders through the scenic Konkan coast of Maharashtra after emerging from the Western Ghats.

It travels over a vast area of 2233 sq. km, passing through the blocks of Guhagar, Dapoli, Khed, and Chiplun. The river at Dabhol merges with the Arabian Sea as it gets closer to its destination, creating a breathtaking display of the harmony of nature.

Guhagar offers delectable seafood, including crab, prawns, and fish. The local cuisine is a blend of Konkani and Maharashtrian flavors, with dishes like solkadhi, ukadiche modak, and amboli being popular. The Turtle Festival :

The impressive tropical town of Guhagar is well-known for its thick coconut groves, mango trees, betel nuts, and ancient temples that are tucked away in the thick forest. One of the most popular locations for Olive Ridley Turtle nesting is Guhagar Beach.

Because there are so few Olive-Ridley Turtle nesting sites left in the world, they are regarded as endangered due to various human activities, such as turtle-unfriendly fishing methods, egg theft, development, and so on. The survival rate of olive-ridley turtles is declining, and factors like global warming and pollution are heavily to blame.

The Guhagar Turtle Festival is a celebration of the sea turtles that live along the Konkan coast. Visitors can experience the spellbinding sight of sea turtles gracefully making their way onto the sandy shores to lay their priceless eggs during the Turtle Festival in Guhagar.

Participants can take part in educational workshops where they can learn about the life cycle of sea turtles, their patterns of migration, and the difficulties they encounter in the modern world. The festival focuses on increasing public awareness of sea turtle conservation.
